Misogynic Semiosis in American Fiction: A Critical Perspective on Female Characters’ Dress and Appearance

This study attempts to explore whether the attire and appearance of female characters in American fiction is a semiosis patriarchal power. The sociology dress was used as theoretical stance this research. Two novels, “Gone with Wind” “The Help” were selected using criterion sampling. excerpts from these novels analyzed by Fairclough’s three-dimensional method critical discourse analysis grounded Halliday’s view language semiotic system (1978/2007). Findings show that values, dominance, misogyny, expectation fulfil feminine norms socio-economic status are expressed through women's dress. There also evidence generic/discursive overlaps which reflect changes structure society, particular, implication all male-dominated societies world including Pakistan. has implications for evaluation ideologies imagined realities naturalized literary genres.
